In my Instagram stories the other day I briefly discussed the benefits of negative ions in our environment. Despite the “negative” connotation, negative ions are good! They are electrically charged molecules that exist naturally in the environment- particularly in forests, near flowing water, mountains, beaches, you get the idea. They have a mood boosting benefit, enhance our quality of sleep, aid mental focus, and oxygenate our tissues. Bottom line: getting out in nature is deeply nourishing for us, and who hasn’t felt better after a day spent outdoors?
Positive ions, on the other hand, are generated from what we tend to spend more time around- cell phones, computers, fluorescent lighting, air pollution, etc. We can offset positive ions in the home with things like beeswax candles, lots of plants, himalayan salt lamps, water fountains (moving water produces negative ions), and stones like amethyst and tourmaline (yes, I’m here to validate that crystal obsession. It’s good for your health! 😆)
But did you know that clay also holds a negative charge? Clay is intelligent, pure earth. It is made up of skin nourishing minerals as well as nanocrystals. Crystals are capable of memory, and can re-organize and hold energy. The use of clay by humans for medicinal and wellness purposes is likely as old as mankind.
In my facials I work exclusively with clay masks that have been formulated to include moisturizing and ultra calming ingredients like ceramides, aloe, calendula and ginseng. All the benefits of clay without the dryness.
If you’re going to DIY it: keep your clay mask wet- don’t let it dry. You can use wet gauze or a damp towel, lay down, and drape it over your face. If using a pure clay powder like bentonite, mix in some honey, yogurt, and a bit of jojoba oil to make a much more moisturizing concoction. You’ll still get the detoxifying benefits of the clay.
